His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani received a telephone call from President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, during which the Indonesian leader offered his condolences and sympathy on the death of the Late Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, praying to God Almighty to grant the deceased His vast mercy and place him in His spacious Paradise, and to grant the Amir and the ruling family patience and solace.
A Tribute Also Paid in Person in Jakarta
The phone call followed an in-person gesture by President Prabowo earlier the same day. On Wednesday, the Indonesian president visited the Embassy of Qatar in Jakarta to sign the book of condolence, where he was welcomed by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Qatar's Ambassador to Indonesia, Sultan bin Mubarak Saad Al-Dosari. "On behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, I extend our deepest condolences on the passing of His Highness the Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. May Allah SWT Almighty grant him the highest place in heaven," Prabowo wrote in the condolence book.
Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka separately offered condolences and participated in an absentee funeral prayer for the late Father Amir held at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, underscoring the depth of Indonesia's tribute.
Warm Qatar-Indonesia Ties
The exchange reflects the close and longstanding relationship between Qatar and Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation. Sheikh Hamad himself contributed to strengthening those ties during his reign, meeting then-President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on at least two occasions — first in Doha in 2006 and later in Jakarta in 2009. Sheikh Tamim has continued that engagement, hosting President Prabowo in Doha in both April and September 2025. The two leaders have also been in regular contact amid the ongoing regional crisis, with Indonesia repeatedly voicing solidarity with Qatar and calling for de-escalation.
Part of a Global Wave of Condolences
President Prabowo's call formed part of a steady stream of messages from heads of state as Qatar's mourning period continued. On the same day, Sheikh Tamim received telephone calls from King Felipe VI of Spain, King Mohammed VI of Morocco, and King Philippe of Belgium, all conveying their condolences. Earlier in the week, he had received calls from US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, while an extraordinary procession of world leaders traveled to Lusail Palace over three days to pay their respects in person.
Sheikh Hamad's Legacy
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until voluntarily handing power to Sheikh Tamim in 2013, one of the rare peaceful transfers of leadership in the Gulf. His 18 years in power transformed Qatar into one of the world's leading liquefied natural gas exporters and an influential diplomatic power, saw the adoption of Qatar's first permanent constitution in 2004, the founding of Al Jazeera in 1996, and the successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Qatar declared four days of national mourning beginning Sunday, with flags at half-mast and government work suspended until employees return on Sunday, July 19.
